The real reason Buffett has promoted increasing taxes on the "rich" is because he holds significant quantities of US Treasury bonds - and taxes on US subjects will be used to pay interest to US bondholders, such as Buffett. Buffett himself - and essentially his entire family, for that matter - has parked money in foundations, which pay zero taxes. Has Buffett called on foundations to pay taxes? No. The man is a clever liar and hypocrite who knows how to manipulate the perceptions of the masses to get what he wants - increasing cash flows guaranteed by the US government.

Good for you David! I had intentions of writing just such an open letter. Buffet will not take up the challenge - but there was a need to start calling bluffs. The speeches of so-called patriotic millionaires are the equivalent of Obama's campaign speeches. They are nothing but PR intended to buy
favor in the public eyes. If Buffet or any of the others were really serious he/they would have long ago gotten involved in real activism.

He could have spent some of his billions in real activist activities. They could for example hire chartered buses for transportation to demonstrations too distant for people who could not otherwise attend (such as the upcoming Oct. 6 event at Freedom Plaza, Washington D.C.) I for example badly want to go but can't as I would need at least two people to share transportation and room expenses. (I'm a senior living on social security)

There are in fact sufficient numbers of Americans fed up with the system. What is lacking is organization and mobilizing. The reason we haven't had the non-violent revolution required for change is that there are too many - and I include activists - who refuse to stop clinging to hope that change can come through the system or from election.

The system is so corrupted that it is now impossible for an Andrew Jackson, or group of Jacksons to rout the vipers out. Not being able to face the fact that only we the people can usher in change has been the greatest obstacle to change.

Something big is about to happen within days. WikiLeaks has just been served with a copy of a court order that was signed on Jan 4 this year, which was ordered kept sealed until.....now. Julian has just released another batch of leaked documents, including a photocopy of the court order that was to served to Dynadot sometime between Jan 4 and now. Dynadot was WikiLeaks server prior to the big leak event.

I suspect we're about to experience serious losses in Internet freedoms....

Dan GarvinAug 20
" ...financially support politicians and organizations that seek to change these government rigging processes ... "

Who?

Who you ask? All he has to do is throw his full support behind Ron Paul. After we get Ron Paul elected he could throw his money behind a new political party. A new party that will worship Liberty, the Constitution and the Bill Of Rights. This can be done now and we could use a money man to help drive it, like the Koch Bro's are doing with the Tea Party. But, the Tea Party is not the answer. A new third party "is" the answer.

It is enough that Buffet said what the said. Don't kill the goose that laid the golden egg. His honesty and directness is to be appreciated. Imagine the complexity of his finances and the difficulty to make a check to the government when his competitors don't have to. What amount precedent would be set if he say gave a million dollars? Others then could escape with that donation and save face. Larger more impressive amounts could destroy part of his business. This article is next to foolish to suggest he unrealistically set a precedent by writing a check to the government.

Give Warren a break...at least he had the gumption to say it honestly that the billionaires are getting "special treatment" by our millionaire Congress royalty... and in the process risking a slice of his own assets. Warren's got guts and I think he's nerdy lovable patriot. He's said a heck of a lot more than any of his elite group of billionaires. He's saying things that our elected representatives should be saying God bless him...and may he live to be a hundred to keep helping us out. Maybe he can straighten out Bill Gates on Bill's support of Monsanto's campaign to destroy the world's natural seed supply with terminator seed technology. Petro-fertilizer, pesticide-based, and petroleum intensive farming are nothing more than quick fixes to region specific food shortages...and are not sustainable and will only lead to more widespread and massive famines in the future.

Warren is trying to make out as if he is running with the hare when in fact he is hunting with the hounds.

When the Fed / Wall Street system dies [under its own weight] Warren will point to this bit of PR fluff and say that he was was with us all along.

Warren you may be a billionaire - BUT - are you a man with balls? Lets see you stand and deliver!!

Use your billions to leverage the tainted trillions into the mouths of those that are hungry.

They say you are smartest investor around. Lets see you invest in what really matters - the people of the country.

Lets see you invest like a wise man and not a smart Aleck.

Lets see, you are Warren Buffet and not Warren Buffet that is picking tasty bits and pieces from across the suffering sectors of the economy to feed your greed.

The final analyze: Who else have you feed beside your self. (Tax Dodge and profit maximization philanthropy aside. Trust and Tax sheltered giving is for gain). Kindness is: your giving - their gain.

Remember that hand that gives is higher than the hand the receives.

You can carve your place in history or remain another me - me - me too billionaire and the Wall Street and Fed gold digger.

I think that many of the comments on WB's New York Times letter are failing to see the point. What he is saying is that Congress should increase taxes on the rich, which, by the way, is the way 69% of Americans feel - check the polls; he is not calling for voluntary measures on the part of the mega-rich.

Nothing in his letter indicates that the problems with the US deficit can be handled by voluntary gifts from the rich. Buffett clearly realizes that the rich are far too greedy to do anything voluntarily, in exactly the same fashion that big business is far too greedy to regulate themselves, and therefore require governmental regulation.
