http://www.publicintegrity.org/2013/05/16/12652/lax-state-rules-provide-cover-sponsors-attack-ads
While much criticism has been lobbed at the federal system for failing to adequately identify who is spending money to influence campaigns, 35 states have independent spending disclosure laws that are less stringent than federal election law.
In fact, in 30 states it’s impossible to total how much money outside groups are spending on campaigns, information that is mostly available when it comes to federal contests.

News Discussion: 2 days, 4 hours ago · ViewRound the Clock Surveillance: Is This the Price of Living in a ‘Free, Safe’ Society?
Read MoreImmediately following the devastating 9/11 attacks, which destroyed the illusion of invulnerability which had defined American society since the end of the Cold War, many Americans willingly ceded their rights and liberties to government officials who promised them that the feeling of absolute safety could be restored.
In the 12 years since, we have been subjected to a series of deceptions, subterfuges and scare tactics by the government, all largely aimed at amassing more power for the federal agencies and extending their control over the populace. Starting with the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, continuing with the torture of detainees at Abu Ghraib and Guantanamo Bay, and coming to a head with the assassination of American citizens abroad, the importing of drones and other weapons of compliance, and the rise in domestic surveillance, we have witnessed the onslaught of a full-blown crisis in government.
Still Americans have gone along with these assaults on their freedoms unquestioningly.
Even with our freedoms in shambles, our country in debt, our so-called “justice” system weighted in favor of corporations and the police state, our government officials dancing to the tune of corporate oligarchs, and a growing intolerance on the part of the government for anyone who challenges the status quo, Americans have yet to say “enough is enough.”

News Discussion: 5 days, 10 hours ago · ViewJustice subpoenaed AP phone records, news service says
http://www.cnn.com/2013/05/13/us/justice-ap-phones/index.html
On the surface it seems to be about the US-Israeli cyber attack on Iran, and the president’s ”personal involvement” in drone attacks, but in the wake of 9/11 and the Patriot Act, ”the government” (Justice Department) has the right to subpoena nearly anything.
CNN legal analyst Jeffrey Toobin said. ”It’s legal, as far as I can tell. The administration isn’t violating the First Amendment.”
Just got to love those neo-lib apologists for CNN…
Here’s a more apt headline from a more information laden article:
’Justice Department’s pursuit of AP’s phone records is both extreme and dangerous’”The claimed legal basis for these actions is unknown, but the threats they pose to a free press and the newsgathering process are clear”
http://bit.ly/18JdGE1”I know, wino!” That’s what I would tell my cat after I picked him up and gave him a hug, after he’s meowed very loudly that I’d hurt him when I stepped on his tail or his foot when he was underfoot. He would forgive me and five minutes later he’d be underfoot again. Its times like these, in these moments, I miss some of my old friends who were too crazy to make it in the virtual world of Internet and social media. Its times like these, and in these moments I miss me old cat, Scooter. We would replace him but since my Rose Bowl Day accident, my health concerns and the accompanying chores on a daily basis are our high maintenance pet. I won’t give a rundown of getting old health-related inconveniences but suffice it to say, we don’t have time for a cat anymore. So to @PoetParzival I say, I know, wino! See, what I do is write my story the way I want it, and then I find someone out on the Internet who agrees with me and then use him or her to prove my point. In the case of Barack v AP, or the DoJ v the First Amendment (to discover a White House mole), I found neo-lib apologist and legal analyst for CNN, Jeffrey Toobin. Its all for a good cause, even if Glenn Greenwald is quite correct in saying what the Obama administration is doing is is both extreme and dangerous. When it is learned who the White House mole is, his name will be turned over to the Secret Service, who will then begin connecting the dots to who beyond your usual political assassination, is the most likely of the usual suspects to harm the president. Preventing the assassination of President Obama is a full time job, and it won’t be a lone gunman a la Lee Harvey Oswald, or Bobby or MLK or Malcolm-related, rather it will be someone found connected to the White House mole whose network needs to be found out. Except for a few truthers, and conspiracy nuts, I can’t find anyone who agrees with this ”assassination prevention” theory.

”The Cleveland public relations firm of Hennes Paynter Communication is representing all three women, said Barbara Paynter of that company. Paynter said that her firm of crisis management specialists is working pro bono after being ”asked to help them out,” joining a team of like-minded individuals that includes lawyers and counselors.”
This happens THIS soon after these women were freed? The counselors I can totally understand but the lawyers? The guy that did this is locked up. Pretty sure he is not rich so suing him seems moot.
That must mean they need them for book deals and movie deals. Really – you think these women are thinking about THAT NOW?
