I too shared your rage at the hypnosis induced by the mass media.. then I rang the satellite TV company and said ”come and get your box, I’m out.”. I then plugged my computer into the flat screen and never looked back. The atmosphere within this house changed straight away- with out advertisements and ”objective” news, we as a family rethought our priorities and are better people for it.
Turn off the TV. It’s great- spread the word.

Here is an interesting article reflecting the movement away from neo-liberal economic practice and the benefit to society in rejecting IMF driven austerity policy or the dismantling of social programs. For eons individuals have labored in solitude while the wealthy and powerful elites ruled with flame sword and shot. The rise of populism in the late 18th and 19th century demonstrated that rule by force or divine right (sanctified force) is only derived through the consent of the people and should not be hereditary. However, the elites merely made economic power the main driver while inherited political power was diminished to what wealth could buy.

All the discussion I’ve heard about monetary policy seems to be based in theory without ties to the real world. It’s like a discussion of the nature of time revolving around the details of seconds, minutes, hours, days and so forth. The human metric of time is NOT innate to time, it is a construct of our own making. Likewise the creation of money is a human construct to tie a abstract concept to a real world metric of accounting. I think someone discovered that it costs money to coin money and wrongly concluded that you can never recoup that loss.

As an abstract concept, hard currency worked well in the past because one could invest time and effort into an expedition that could create wealth from only the time and effort, claiming gold from the ground (or from murdering other people and taking theirs). However, about 150 years ago, the frontiers started to disappear, there was less unclaimed ground to get wealth from and fewer weak tribes to steal from. Soon almost all resources were claimed by some person or state and commodities based currency became a closed system. This is not to say that resources are not still being extracted, just that most are already known and in the system at least in a potential way. Oil companies also trade on their ability to find new sources of oil.

The article I reference makes a very good point; ”the true revolution is not to replace US power with another, similar false prophet of ”freedom” defined by the marketplace alone. The true revolution is to make the marketplace the servant of humanity’s dreams, rather than their master. ” I would likewise say that if money is the means of accountancy for the marketplace, then we should focus more on the use of the tool than it’s design, though the design IS a relevant topic.
