Yeah, like I’m sooo sure David Degraw is an ignorant child. How ignorant does someone have to be to actually write that drivel on top of Degraw’s detailed analyses?

Getting back to Kevin Carson (so you could review the source if you want a clearer picture), though he’s anti-govt, and he’s critiqued neoliberal faux “free market” capitalism and globalization as govt-subsidized projects, he at least has the common sense to say he’d PREFER a maternalistic social welfare state to the kind of starvation mode and de-industrialization (and pitting workers against each other globally) that the financial oligarchs prefer with their neo-liberal “tough love” and “rule of the rich”.

I mean we still have Labor Laws on the books, what hasn’t been undone or watered down or reversed, but it used to be that corporations were held to obey Labor Laws too, not violate them but hold the union workers to the Law and have them thrown them in prison for improper organizing.  This is how we DEVELOPED a middle class.

Various political theorists described forms of Anarchism, in which there is no govt running the economy.  Of course there would be no corporations either, since corporations are *special* forms of business sanctioned and defined by the State in Law.  (Individuals could form joint-stock corporations, but no govt would grant them “personhood” or any inherent “rights” to protect them from being sued or blocked by communities.

It’s true that in our current parlance, with govt providing SO MANY forms of welfare-for-the-rich (most of them ordinary people don’t know about, obscure or too complicated, like ways that govt subsidizes globalization of industry and finance), so most people think in terms of “give back”, and that sounds like Nanny State redistribution, New New Deal and such.

Well in FDR’s govt, it was not only “professors” but the business and banking executives and lobbyists that helped write the New Deal.  Also some small business lobbied for protections from larger capitalists that would use deep pockets and credit to drive out competition. 

On the other hand, it was decades prior to FDR that the Progressive Era began under McKinley and TR and Taft etc, the marriage of industry and govt to block “ruinous competition” from harming capital with cheaper prices and better methods, and to prevent STRONG state-level and local political agitation from the grassroots from successfully blocking or even killing corporations which harmed the public good.

Capitalism has NEVER had much in common with “free markets” except in myth.

A “lighter” version of the same ideas which is not aimed at anarchist mutual aid sans govt might be Dean Baker who argues for stripping the wealthy of their PRE-TAX privileges rather than focusing on “Bush tax cuts”, since any liberal aims to repeal “Bush tax cuts” are designed to cut LOW into the upper middle class (not the top 1% or 0.5%) where they can pick up enough negativity to allow Obama to “fail” i.e. succeed in keeping the banksters tax free.

That would be Dean Baker, the End of Loser Liberalism.  How to stop the super-wealthy from raping us up front with patent monopolies and other government subsidies.

But don’t you think that we should stay on point?  I want to fight corruption.

We have the concept of “Jubilee” already encoded into US law – bankruptcy.  To be in debt, a person signs a contract with stipulations about how the lender and debtor will perform.  There are two types of debt contracts – secured and unsecured. Your mortgage or your car loan are secured; the contract states that you will pay X amount of dollars over Y time period, but if you don’t make the payments, then the lender will come and take your house or car as fulfillment of the contract.  There’s no problem here – if you can’t make the house payment, the bank gets the house. The borrower will have ruined credit, but after a period of time, will be able to buy a house again. That the bank has millions of houses that are worth 50% of the money they lent is the bank’s problem, and because they made utterly horrible business decisions, they should go broke, thereby stiffing their shareholders and bondholders. We are in big trouble today because these people don’t want to suffer the consequences of their actions, but they expect you to suffer the consequences of yours.

With credit card debt or student loan debt, both of which are unsecured (nothing to take back), the lender better be careful about who he or she is lending to, because if the borrower defaults, then the lender gets nothing.  This is what bankruptcy is for – if you’re over head in debt, you file for bankruptcy and the courts step in.  The borrower’s credit is ruined, but again, after some time, you can rebuild your credit and rejoin the game. The lender gets stiffed, but there have to be consequences for them as well – this is the essence of market discipline.

You don’t need jubilee – you need to allow students to declare bankruptcy on student loans. You need business people to suffer the consequences of their actions. For unsecured lending (credit cards), we should require the banks to have one dollar of capital for every dollar they lend unsecured – not true today. Reinstate Glass-Stegall. Make banking a boring utility function again. Again, we are in trouble because the elites have gamed the system so that they do not suffer the consequences of their actions – they have bought off politicians so that the taxpayers take the hit when their frauds blow up. You can’t fix that by giving people free cars and houses, you fix it by sending criminals to jail.
